The Maserati Boyle Special Indy 500 OW 1938 was a unique racecar that was developed by Italian racecar manufacturer Maserati. It was unveiled at the 1938 Indianapolis 500, driven by American driver Ralph Hepburn. The car was a one-off that was built specifically for that years race, with a long wheelbase chassis and a 225 cubic inch straight 8 engine. It featured a lightweight body and a long-stroke suspension, as well as twin carburettors, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 141 mph. The Boyle Special was the firms most radical single-seater design at the time, featuring contoured lines, a single exhaust vent, and a low slung windscreen. The cars bold red color and brass accents further added to its sporty look. Its performance on the track was unmatched, and it came very close to winning the 1938 Indianapolis 500, ultimately finishing second. Despite its short racing career, the Maserati Boyle Special Indy 500 OW 1938 was a magnificent piece of engineering that was well ahead of its time.
