The Leyland Motors 3-tonner RAF World War I Truck was a durable, hard-working vehicle of the era. Built between 1915 and 1918, these trucks were designed to transport much needed supplies for the war effort. Initially powered by a 3.5-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, later models switched to a diesel version. The Leyland 3-tonners had a maximum speed of around 15 mph, remarkable in an era more used to horse-drawn carriages. Built with a rigid chassis, these trucks boasted two-wheel drive and had four forward gears plus reverse. The Leyland 3-tonner was designed with a sturdy frame of sheet steel with an open top cab and a front axle with two rigid wheels providing the necessary traction. The rear axle was spring mounted with solid rubber-tired wheels and a winch for self-loading and unloading. The payload capacity of the original 3-tonner was 1,000lbs per axle, boasting the capacity to haul a variety of supplies and munitions all over the Western Front. Equipped with sloping sides and mudguards, it was a go-anywhere vehicle capable of traveling off-road in mud, snow and other difficult conditions. Ultimately, the Leyland Motors 3-tonner RAF World War I Truck was a reliable workhorse, instrumental in keeping the Allies supplied and victorious during the war.
