The International Fire Truck 1950 is an iconic symbol of firefighting from a bygone era. Built by International Harvester, the truck was commonly found in service from the 1950s through to the 1990s. Its recognizable bright red and white paint scheme adorned the exterior, while the interior showcased intricate detailing including a reverse light amber warning light, chrome instrumentation, a unique fire bell and a full range of engine gauges. The fire engine was powered by a gasoline engine and had two pumping systems – a front-mounted centrifugal pump and a 1000-gallon-per-minute midship-mounted toroidal pump. This capable machine was able to range from 1,000 to 900 gallons/minute and had multiple hose connections and nozzles. The truck was built to handle all terrain types and had heavy duty suspension and off-road capability. Its size and complexity, along with its low center of gravity, made it well suited to serving in a great variety of terrain, from sand to snow, and allowed it to be used in a variety of firefighting purposes. With five large wheel hubs, the fire apparatus was fully capable of managing the most extreme conditions. Its distinct look added a sense of awe and respect from fireman and citizens alike. Whether it be roaring down the street to battle a fire, or eliciting admiration from the public, the International Fire Truck 1950 is one of the most renowned fire trucks of its time.
