The Humber Mk1 Truck, introduced in 1977, was a classic medium-sized commercial vehicle built by British manufacturer Rootes Motors. It featured a square-cut cab, a semi-forward control body style, and a flat-four turbo-diesel engine. Its body was made from strong, yet light-weight materials, with steel panels making up the entire frame, including the roof, which was evidenced by the cab buttresses. The cabin was spacious, providing plenty of room for three passengers and boasting twin sunroofs and adjustable seats. The driver also benefitted from a column-mounted gearshift and a plethora of controls for convenience. The truck was powered by a four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine that delivered a maximum torque of 153 lb-ft and a power output of 66 bhp. Making it slightly lighter than other mid-size competitors, the Mk1 Truck had an impressive payload capacity of 2100kgs, making it a useful machine for transporting goods and materials. Its four-speed manual transmission was accompanied by 27:1 overall gearing, allowing it to cope with very low speed, despite its relatively high power-to-weight ratio. The rear axle featured a Dana differential, providing rear-wheel drive and excellent traction. For outdoor work, the truck's robustness was evidenced by the grille and body panels, which were built to take on whatever the elements could throw at it. Furthermore, the stiff chassis made it a great choice for emergency and off-road driving, with enough resilience to cope with the most challenging terrain. Modern and attractive, the Humber Mk1 Truck epitomized the post-war truck-building ethos, offering a reliable, economical and attractive medium-sized commercial vehicle.
