Carrozzeria Moretti was a small automobile and motorcycle manufacturer and especially an Italian bodybuilder, whose activity lasted from 1926 to 1989. Founded in Turin by Giovanni Moretti in 1926, the Carrozzeria Moretti presents its first motorcycle achievement. Shortly after the manufacture of a complete line of scooters and light motorcycles, including competition models, saw the light of day. It was from the mid-1930s that Moretti produced his first automobile: the Moretti 500, a small three-seater torpedo with a 500cc twin-cylinder engine placed at the front. At the start of World War II, when fuel had become an extremely scarce commodity, Moretti produced an electric traction truck that had a payload of 3.0 tonnes. This vehicle was marketed under the name Moretti Elettrocarro. Using the same electric motor, Moretti also presented an automobile designed for public transport. Its body, far ahead of its time, was what is now called a monovolume called Moretti Elettrovettura and could accommodate 7 passengers. The production of these two extraordinary vehicles for this time was limited. No one has found a restored copy. In 1946, the company launched the Moretti Cit, a micro car which achieved good commercial success. The Moretti 600 and Moretti 750 (de) models follow. The productions of the Moretti workshops are distinguished by the very high standard of its finishes but above all by a remarkable panoply of bodywork configurations which include the sedan, the coupe, the spider and the giardinetta (family or commercial). But the launch of large series models such as the Fiat 600, then the Fiat 500, poses major concerns for the Moretti company because of its very high costs generated by small series and adaptations to demand. This is why, at the end of the 1950s, the company decides to stop the production of independent models and to devote itself to the realization of special bodies for production models of other manufacturers. From the 1960s, freed from the burden of designing and manufacturing all the mechanical parts of its cars, the Moretti company presented an impressive series of models based on Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Fiat, always with the same concern for quality of its finishes and interior fittings. Most of these models have received the signature of the famous Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti who will sign more than thirty bodies. In 1964, Moretti SpA had 145 employees, including 120 workers and 25 employees. The workshops were spread over a covered area of 9,000 m2. Annual production was around 1,500 units. During the 1970s, especially after the first oil shock of 1973, the Moretti company had to drastically reduce its range to offer only uncovered versions of large series Fiat models such as the Spiaggina, the Fiat 126 Moretti Minimaxi, the Fiat 127 Moretti Midimaxi and the luxurious Fiat 128 Moretti Roadster. All these models, very little known to the general French public, obtained a good and long success with enthusiasts of special cars. This product policy will continue during the 1980s, but with less commercial penetration due to the changing taste of the clientele, with the Fiat Uno Moretti Folk and Fiat Panda Moretti Rock models, until the definitive closure of the company. end of December 1989.
