Specifications AS 37 Sahariano Truck blueprint

The Fiat-SPA AS37 is a truck produced by the Piemontese Automobili Company (SPA) for the Royal Army, specifically for use in a desert environment. The acronym AS stands for Saharan Truck. This vehicle was developed starting in 1938 from the Fiat-SPA TL37 Libya version light artillery tractor. The Royal Army received the first specimens in 1938 and these merged into the Saharan companies of the governor of Libya Italo Balbo, at the rate of 22 vehicles per company. At the outbreak of hostilities, they equipped the Saharan auto-aviation companies that participated in all the fighting, from the Graziani offensive in 1940 to the defense of Tunisia in 1943. The vehicle took up the characteristics 4 large driving and steering wheels of the TL37 Libya, excellent on soft terrain such as the desert one the vehicle was equipped with a compressor for regulating the inflation of the wheels themselves. It also fitted an oil air filter, suitable for sandy environments, and hydraulic shock absorbers on the front axle, while the rear suspension was strengthened. Increasing fuel tank capacity and adding potable water tanks increased the range needed for missions behind enemy lines. The vehicle differed from the TL37 in the bodywork, characterized by a closed rigid cockpit and a large tarpaulin rear body, capable of carrying 8 fully equipped men on folding benches or 1530 kg of cargo. The spare wheel was placed between the cab and the body, behind the drivers seat. In 1941, the need for fire support for the Saharan auto-aviation companies prompted the Libyan workshops of the Royal Army to transform the Saharan truck on site into an armed exploration vehicle, unofficially renamed AS37 Desert Truck. The flaw of the particularly high shape, and therefore easily identifiable in the flat desert environment, was solved by removing the cabin. The rear wooden caisson was eliminated and replaced by a platform, on which the Breda 20/65 Mod. 1935 anti-aircraft gun or the 47/32 Mod. 1935 anti-tank gun was installed on 360 pivoting supports. Tanks of fuel and water were placed on special racks on the sides and on the front fenders, thus increasing the autonomy of the vehicle.
