The Fiat Turbina is a car developed and built by the Italian manufacturer FIAT. The model was first exhibited at the Turin Motor Show in 1954. With this unusual model, the Italian manufacturer is the first manufacturer on the old continent to produce a car powered by a gas turbine. The study of this propulsion system began in the Fiat design office in 1948. The first test took place on April 4, 1954 on the track located on the roof of the Lingotto factory. The engine is equipped with a two-stage compressor, a two-stage turbine, a drive turbine and a reduction group for transmission to the wheels. The declared maximum speed is greater than 250 km / h. The body is recognizable by its two rear fins which act as stabilizers. The assembly is completely removable and hides the propulsion system in a fully soundproofed compartment. The whole is due to the Centro Stile Fiat managed, at the time, by Fabio Luigi Rapi. The advanced aerodynamic study allows the car to post a record Cx of 0.14. The frame is tubular and has four independent wheels. The gearbox is made unnecessary thanks to the turbine, which behaves like a hydraulic converter. The transmission has a reduction gear that changes the rotational speed from 22,000 rpm at maximum turbine speed to 4,000 rpm at the differential. The front suspensions derive from those of the Fiat 8V of 1952. The lighting system, which met the homologation criteria for normal vehicles, is composed of tilting rectangular headlights embedded in the body. This innovative solution will be taken up by the bodybuilder Bertone for the second car in the Alfa Romeo BAT series. After having reigned supreme throughout the Show and having won the admiration of specialists, this innovative concept car will have its performance officially approved and will be donated to the Turin Automobile Museum, where it still figures prominently.
