The iconic Ferrari 512 BB Le Mans coupe was first made available in 1981 as a track-oriented variant of the slightly more road-oriented 512 Berlinetta Boxer. It marked a return for Ferrari to the world-renowned 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, which it had last won in 1973 with its 365 GTB/4 Daytona Le Mans. The 1981 Ferrari 512 BB Le Mans featured several modifications that set it apart from its lesser siblings. The Le Mans had a sleeker, refined look compared to the 512 Berlinetta. The car had a sloped hood, a longer wheelbase, and an extended rear deck that encompassed the luggage compartment. The aluminum body panels were handcrafted and welded to create a lightweight, aerodynamic look. The signature gull-wing doors also contributed to the 512 BB Le Mans' distinctive style. Under the hood, the Le Mans was equipped with a 4.9-liter flat-12 engine, producing 360 horsepower and a top speed of 165 mph (265 km/h). The engine was mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, which provided smooth and precise shifts. Another key component was the updated chassis, which featured single-piece hubs, adjustable dampers, and aluminum brakes for superior handling on the track. Inside, the interior featured luxurious touches such as leather seats, air conditioning, and power windows. The instrument panel contained the traditional tachometer, speedometer, and oil pressure gauges, as well as several other useful indicators. For convenience, a clutch pedal assist was fitted to reduce driver fatigue on longer trips. The 1981 Ferrari 512 BB Le Mans was a true masterpiece of Italian design, a potent combination of race-bred performance and luxury. It has since become a highly sought-after classic, with a few examples still fetching millions at auctions.
