Released in 1979, the Datsun 521l Pick-up was designed to be a reliable, affordable option for the budget-minded truck user. Its exterior was simplicity at its finest, featuring black bumpers and wheels that complemented its powder blue body. The interior was intentionally kept spartan to keep costs down, but featured an upholstered bench seat in an array of optional colors. The base model was equipped with a 1.6 liter four-cylinder engine, which was capable of producing 60 horsepower and 77 ft-lbs of torque, but it could be upgraded with a 2.4 liter engine for better performance. The truck had a 4-speed manual transmission as standard, but was also available with an automatic option. The drivetrain featured a manual part-time four-wheel drive system, making it great for navigating off-road terrain. The suspension featured a live-axle in the rear and torsion bars up front, giving a comfortable ride both in and out of urban areas. The payload capacity was 673 kg, giving the truck excellent hauling capability. The 521l was also known for its rugged toughness, meaning it could take plenty of abuse and still keep running. It was lauded for providing excellent value for the money.
