The BAR 004 F1 OW 2002 is an iconic Formula 1 racing car produced by British American Racing during the 2002 season. Built to succeed the BAR 003, the 004 was a significant improvement over its predecessor. It was designed with one purpose in mind - to help BAR break its run of mid-table mediocrity and make a return to the front of the grid. The 004 car featured a sleek aerodynamic body structure, designed with an array of advanced features to pushed it to the limit. Its lightweight chassis was made from an intense blend of composites, maximizing strength while decreasing weight. At the front, the car featured a wide and highly efficient splitter, sending air over the surface of the car while increasing downforce. Its tall and blocky sidepods, meanwhile, were made to optimize airflow around the car's bodywork. The BAR 004 was powered by a 3.0-litre V10 engine from Honda, delivering nearly 800 horsepower, mated to a semi-automatic 6-speed gearbox. Its suspension featured independent wheel shoulders, both front and rear, with an array of sophisticated adjustable components which could be tailored to suit the conditions of each race. Titanium plates were also used throughout the car to reduce drag and maximize speed. In the hands of driver Jacques Villeneuve, the BAR 004 F1 OW 2002 shocked the Formula 1 world by taking the championship lead at the halfway stage of the season. Eventually, the team would finish fourth in the overall constructors' standings, signalling a new era of potential for BAR and further underlining the potential of the 004's design.
