The 1963 Austin Mini Cooper S Hatchback is a classic British icon and something of a style statement. With its go-kart like handling, reliable mechanicals and instantly-recognizable looks, the Austin Mini Cooper S Hatchback is one of the most iconic and beloved vehicles of its time. The original 1963 model featured a 997cc, 4-cylinder, A-Series engine, in either a single or twin carburetor tuned version, which produced approximately 55 bhp (brake horse power). The engine was mated to a manual front-wheel drive 4-speed transmission, with a synchromesh on all gears, to assist with smooth shifting. The car was built around the classic Mini frame, and featured a box-like, two-door body with the spare wheel mounted externally at the rear. At the time, it was considered revolutionary for its amount of space within the interior, which could fit four adults with ease thanks to its monocoque construction and no protruding engine or gearbox. It also featured a unique egg-crate style grille consisting of dozens of little holes, as well as large, round headlights. There were a variety of optional extras that could be added, such as an additional, exterior bonnet mounted rally lights, adjustable suspension dampers, larger disc brakes, an improved cooling system, and a larger fuel tank. The Mini Cooper S Hatchback was capable of hitting a top speed of around 91mph, while achieving acceleration from 0-60mph in 12 seconds. It was also known for its remarkable fuel efficiency, with the engine able to achieve up to an astonishing 42 miles per gallon. With countless racing victories, a famous fan in The Beatles, and a timeless presence in pop culture, the Austin Mini Cooper S Hatchback remains an automotive icon to this day.
