The 1969 AMC AMX 390 is a two-seat sports car and grand touring vehicle manufactured by the American Motors Corporation. The AMX was the first American-made production two-seat sports car to be offered since 1938. The most powerful engine in the AMX range, the 390-cubic inch (6.4-liter) V8 engine delivered 315 horsepower and 427 foot-pounds of torque, giving it more than enough power to compete with more expensive and well-known luxury and performance cars of the era. The 1969 AMX was designed to be smaller, lighter, faster, and more agile than the average American car of the time and certainly delivered a performance punch greater than its size would suggest. Its light and nimble structure, along with its powerful engine and four-speed manual transmission, made the AMX an ideal car for carving backroads and highways alike. From an aesthetic point of view, the 1969 AMX exemplified the eras concept of cool sharp, angular lines, a front-heavy, racecar-like stance, and a sporty two-tone paint scheme. Its big, bold front grille and trapezoidal-shaped lower front air intakes gave the car an unmistakable look. Large flattened hood scoops on each side added further flair, while the wheelbase was kept short and wide to ensure maximum stability in turns and on the straights. Under the hood, the AMX packed plenty of performance. The 390-cubic inch engine featured an impressive, enlarged 9.2:1 compression ratio and solid valve lifters, allowing it to deliver power right from the start. With the added performance of the standard dual exhaust, this engine could propel the AMX all the way up to 115 miles per hour. Adding to the AMXs performance was its gearing and four-speed manual transmission. Manual steering and manual brakes provided a full sporty experience for those wanting to feel engaged with every twist and turn of the lightweight AMC, while standard front disc brakes and quick-ratio steering gave precise feel and feedback. Uniquely individual, the 1969 AMC AMX 390 is a classic American muscle car that has withstood the test of time in terms of its styling, performance, and driving experience. Filled with the spirit of fun and performance, the AMX is still revered as one of the greatest muscle cars of its era.
