The Hawker Sea Hawk is a jet-powered naval fighter that served the Royal Navy during the 1950s. It was developed by the Hawker Aircraft Company and featured a number of design innovations that allowed it to stand out among other mid-century fighters. The aircraft was powered by a single Rolls-Royce Derwent or Nene turbojet engine, which provided a maximum speed of 560 mph and a maximum altitude of 39,000 feet. The Sea Hawk was armed with a four 20mm Mk. G cannon and had a maximum payload of 1,500 lbs, allowing it to carry a variety of ordnance such as bombs, rockets, or missiles. Its maneuverability and agility earned it a reputation as a formidable dogfighter, while its ability to take off quickly from short runways made it a versatile aircraft. The Hawker Sea Hawk is an iconic aircraft, making appearances in the feature film 633 Squadron as well as the television program Top Gun Maverick. It served with the Royal Navy until the 1960s, when it was replaced by the Hawker Harrier. Its legacy continues to this day, as the design of the current F/A-18 Super Hornet draws on traits found in the original Sea Hawk.
