The Fokker D.XXI was a low wing single-engine monoplane fighter aircraft designed by Dutch aircraft manufacturer, Fokker, in the 1930s. Initially designed as an interceptor, the D.XXI proved to be a very capable fighter aircraft and was used by the Finnish Air Force during the Winter War of 1939-40 and during the following Continuation War of 1941-44. The D.XXI was the last aircraft designed by Anthony Fokker before his death in 1939. The Fokker D.XXI was 40 feet long with a wingspan of 33 feet. It had a maximum speed of 300 miles per hour and a range of 385 miles. It had an open cockpit and was equipped with two forward-facing machine guns. The aircraft was powered by a six-cylinder radial engine of 920hp. The Fokker D.XXI was an agile and very maneuverable aircraft. Its light weight and design made it an ideal aircraft for combat. It was very well liked by its pilots as it could outmaneuver other aircraft of its era and its broad speed range gave the pilots the opportunity to escape from a fight. The D.XXI also had superior climb ability and could easily reach altitudes of 25,000 feet. The Fokker D.XXI was an invaluable part of the Finnish Air Force during the war. While the aircraft was not as well armed as other fighter aircraft of the era and its engine performance was rather inadequate, it was a very reliable aircraft and was used in a multitude of missions. The Fokker D.XXI's ability to fly in the cold winter terrain of Finland made it an impressive asset to the Finnish forces. The aircraft's reliability, maneuverability and courageous pilots allowed the D.XXI to make a lasting impression during the Winter War of 1939-40.
